Materuni Waterfalls & Coffee Tour

On the edge of Kilimanjaro National Park and just a 45-minute drive from Moshi lies Materuni village, an authentic Chagga village. The Chagga are the third largest tribe of over 120 tribes existing in Tanzania, and most of them live on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. You’ll spend most of the day hiking to and visiting Materuni waterfalls, but you’ll also get tons of information about Chagga culture, and the chance to make your own coffee from A to Z. Local style, of course!

Day 1 - Moshi - Materuni Waterfalls - Moshi
Your guide/driver will pick you up in Moshi around 9 am and drive for 45 minutes to Materuni village. After you’ve registered at the village office, your adventure can start.First on the planning is a visit to the waterfalls. You’ll walk for about 45 minutes over narrow paths through lush vegetation. On a clear day, you might see Kilimanjaro, but even if you don’t, we’re sure you won’t be disappointed. The scenery is stunning and your guide will give you a first introduction to Chagga culture and habits. There’ll be time to rest at the waterfall, or even a swim if you’re brave enough to face the cold water.

Later on you’ll walk back to the village over a partly different path, which again will take around 45 minutes. You’ll continue your day with a coffee experience. Your guide will explain more about how the coffee beans are grown, dried, roasted etc. But that’s not all! You won’t just get the explanation, but also the opportunity to execute every step by yourself, while the locals are singing and dancing all around.

After all this hard work you deserve a nice lunch, and the local ‘mama’s’ will be more than happy to prepare some of their favourite Chagga dishes for you. Banana stew, pilau or rice and beans are only a few of the options.

Once you’ve finished your meal and coffee it’s time to leave and your guide/driver will take you back to Moshi.

HOW DIFFICULT IS THE HIKE?
We’d categorize this hike as a rather easy one. Big parts of it are (almost) flat, and the sections that go uphill are short enough to give you time to breathe in between. A few of them are a bit steep, but this hike can be completed by anyone with a normal physical condition. If for any reason you think you’re unable to complete it, we can arrange for a motorbike or even a car to bring you to about 10-15 minutes from the waterfall. During or shortly after the rainy season the paths can get muddy and slippery. We always recommend wearing decent walking shoes, but especially during this time.

I did a 7 day safari with Shiri Adventures and it was incredible. Full disclosure, I did get mine severely discounted as we worked together on content creation/promotion, but I can honestly say I would have absolutely paid full price to do it.Our guide Laurent was amazing. Linus, the Managing Director, is a godsend and helped us with some issues that popped up right before we left as well as answering every little question we had along the way.This trip was the time of our lives (me and my husband went for our honeymoon). I couldn't recommend it enough, and I found Shiri to be very reasonable in cost compared to many other safaris at this level.And we saw the big 5! Shiri Adventures made the whole safari a breeze! We got to see so many animals and different national parks over our 7 day safari. And with the help of our guide we were able to spot and see the all of the big 5 animals (lions, elephants, leopards, water buffalo & rhinos)!  Verified 6 day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro
Absolutely wonderful from start to finish! My friends and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro via the Marangu route with Shiri Adventures, and Linus and his staff delivered an amazing experience. There were 4 of us in our group and we all had limited hiking experience, but we all made it to the summit with the help of our amazing guides Yaki and Bryson, along with the porters. After we finished, they had beers, champagne and a bus waiting for us at the gate. I have traveled quit a bit and I can say I’ve never had a better experience anywhere. If I ever go back to Tanzania I will hire Linus and Shiri Adventures to handle it. I wish I could do more than write a review. We went on a three-day safari with Shiri as well as a day trip to Materuni Falls and Coffee Plantation and Chemka Hot Springs.  I can't say enough good things about how helpful Linus and his staff were before, during, and after our trip.  Everyone was extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and made sure we were enjoying our trip. Me and my wife spend our honeymoon on safari (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Manyara) with Shiri Adventures and I can say that it was the best experience!We didn't have a single complaint. From communication with mr. Linus, who responded quickly to all our questions and concerns (via WhatsApp or email), to the entire organization of Safari, transfers to airport, luxury lodges in national parks… Also, on our safari jeep they put our wedding photo - nice personal touch :)Our guide (mr. Ibra) was an exceptional at finding animals that we could see from a distance of only a few meters! He taught us about animals, their behavior and the habitats they live in, about the natives Maasai (which we also visited), about land Africa and Tanzania... Really experienced guide!
